National Pancake Week: How To Make Fun and Delicious Pancake Shapes

February 20th, 2012

Get creative with your Breakfast for National Pancake Week!

It is national pancake week! If you are a pancake lover, then this article will provide you fun and creative information on how to make pancake shapes. Read to make breakfast fun and enjoyable this week!

When meals are made creatively, it encourages fussy eaters to eat and learn at the same time (make breakfast a geometry or reading lesson). Being an artistic chef for breakfast is a moderately easy duty. It only takes the following items:

Ø Metal geometric-shaped cookie cutters

Ø Non-stick cooking spray

Ø Flat griddle

Ø Pancake batter

Ø Plastic squeeze bottle

Ø Metal Spatula

Ø Plate

Ø Butter Knife

The first thing you need to do is spray your cookie cutters with your non-stick cooking spray. Next, pre-heat your griddle to the temperature suggested by your pancake mix. You should use only a griddle with a flat cooking surface.

Once the griddle is heated, place the cookie cutters on the griddle. Make sure the cutting side is face down.

Pour the pancake batter into your plastic squeeze bottle and squeeze the pancake butter into the cookie cutters until the halfway point.

You do not want to fill the pancake batter anymore than halfway because the batter will flow over the cutters. Cook the pancakes and remove the cookie cutters with the pancakes still attached to it. Use your metal spatula to scrape your pancakes off the griddle and onto to your plates.

Once on the plates, remove the cookie cutter molds from the pancakes.  Place pancakes on uncooked side back on the griddle to brown (cookie cutter molds should not be attached).

Have a happy national pancake week! Do not forget the syrup!

How To Cash In On Lent

February 20th, 2012

When the Mardi Gras party season ends on Feb. 21, restaurants will be looking for a new way to boost business. Savvy Lenten specials can help keep your seats full until spring.

Consumer interest in seafood is so high during that Lent that churches, schools and other community organizations get into the Friday night fish fry business to meet it. Think of them as the originators of the pop-up restaurant concept. Some provide a nice dining experience, others less so.

When there’s so much demand that amateurs can do a couple of hundred covers in a church basement or school gym setting, you know there has to be a sizable number of customers eager to see what professionals are turning out in traditional restaurant settings.

One option would be for your restaurant to serve same thing as the low-priced competition does—a fish sandwich or fish fry meal—only better. But the untapped part of the market may exist at a slightly higher price point. We’ve recommended fish tacos before as a good fast casual or full service Lenten item and still think it’s a good way to go.

Pick a couple items that would work within your restaurant’s pricing structure/service scheme and you’ll have a mini-Lenten menu you can promote. It’s a good way to pump a little life into your restaurant in what can otherwise be a drab time of the year.

Meat-Free Menus

February 13th, 2012

Meat-Free Menus

Vegetable dishes gain new cachet as even carnivores dabble in plant-based preparations.

Though vegetarians still make up a statistically small portion of the population, they are joined by a larger group of diners who don’t avoid meat entirely, but still seek out vegetarian dishes for health reasons or environmental reasons. In fact, the 2011 VRG/Harris survey also found that between 30% and 40% of the U.S. population is very interested in eating vegetarian foods, although they are not vegetarian. Today’s vegetarians have come to expect sophisticated and flavorful vegetarian dishes in fine-dining and causal restaurants. Vegetarian options are also popping up on menus in traditional meat strongholds.

4 Foods To Eat To Improve Your Skin Complexion

February 13th, 2012

Looking for ways to combat acne and improve your complexion? If yes, this article will help you eat better to improve the health of your skin with 4 skin super foods. Read to get started on your perfect skin diet.

Almonds

Almonds are seeds but most people believe they are nuts. Almonds are full of vitamin E, which helps block the sun from harming your skin. If you consume 20 almonds a day, you will suffer from sunburn less. Vitamin E helps protect your skin cells from UV light and helps prevent skin cell damage from environment elements. If you do not like almonds, try 2 Tbsp of peanut butter.

Carrots

Carrots are wonderful vegetables. They can clear up breakouts because of vitamin A. Vitamin A prevents overproduction of cells in your skin’s out layer. Without vitamin A, dead cells and sebum will clog your pores. Vitamin A is also wonderful because it reduces the chances of skin-cancer cells developing. You should eat 16 baby carrots a day. If you do not enjoy eating carrots, have 1 cup of meal or cheddar cheese instead.

 Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is filled with Flavonols, antioxidants that reduce roughness in your skin and protect your skin from sun damage. Dark chocolate gives you better skin texture and makes your skin more resistant to UV rays. Eat a few ounces of dark chocolate a day. If you are not a fan of dark chocolate, eat blackberries, blueberries, cherries, and raspberries.

 Spinach

Eat spinach as much as you can to prevent cancer. Leafy greens prevent skin tumors. They also repair and maintain your DNA, making it easier for your skin cells to renew themselves. Not to mention, the water in spinach and other green make your skin wrinkle less because the water penetrates cell membranes. If you do not enjoy eating spinach, eat collard greens.

6 Calming Foods to Zap Stress

February 7th, 2012

Studies have found that these options can help contribute to a healthy mental state, buffer against the harmful physical effects of stress, and dial up your serenity level. Eat your way to Zen.

Asparagus

The B vitamin is essential in helping you keep your cool when stress rears its ugly head. Steam some spears and add to salads or stir-fries; they’re also tasty broiled and seasoned.

Avocados

Avocados contain more folate than any other fruit. Thinly sliced, it can go a long way on salads or replace mayo on sandwiches or burgers.

Berries

All berries, including blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, are rich in vitamin C, which has been shown to be helpful in combating stress. Add a handful of berries to salad, yogurt, or oatmeal, or try nibbling on them frozen.

Oranges

Another vitamin C powerhouse is oranges. Try some other varieties, like clementines, tangelos, or mineolas.

Oysters

Oysters earned a place on this list because they’re a mother lode of zinc. Six oysters—what you’d typically be served in a restaurant as an appetizer—have more than half the recommended daily allowance for this important calming mineral. fans love ‘em with cocktail sauce, horseradish, or mignonette. Purists favor a simple squeeze of lemon.

Walnuts

They contain alpha-linolenic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid, and other polyphenols that have been shown to help prevent memory loss. omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts keep the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline in check. To bring out their flavor, toast them for 10 minutes, then chop them and add them to salads.

January 31st, 2012

Are you looking for ways to make your grocery shopping healthier? If yes, we are here to help by providing five tips on how to navigate the supermarket in the most effective way. Read below to start making smart choices in the grocery store.

To cook healthy meals, you need the right ingredients on hand in your kitchen. Most grocery shoppers do not have the time to look carefully at food labels and find the best nutritious foods at great buys.

Here are just a few ways to shop and eat better:

 Plan Your Meals Per Week

Before you step into the grocery store, have a game plan. Figure out what meals you want for the week or two weeks. List ingredients you will need to make these meals. Make sure you check out weekly discounts in grocery ads and never go to the grocery store hungry. When you go to the grocery store hungry, you setup yourself to spend more.

Shop For Variety

When shopping, make sure you shop for food included on the food pyramid such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, lean meat, fish, poultry, beans and nuts. Buy food with the most nutritious values. For example, you should buy sweet potatoes over white potatoes because sweet potatoes are richer in beta-carotene.

If you enjoy eating something new every week, pick a new fruit or vegetable for you diet every week. Eat plenty of produce.

Look for the Least Processed Foods

When it comes to breads, cereals and pasta, buy the whole grains with the least amount of processing. Oatmeal is a great whole grain to eat.

Eat Fish Two Times a Week

Fish is affordable and an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. If you are not a fish eater, choose lean cuts of meat such as round, top, sirloin and tenderloin. If you prefer chicken, pick skinless poultry.

Do not forget your Dairy

Dairy foods are a great source of calcium and vitamin D you need for bone growth. You should have three servings a day (this can include yogurts and cheeses as well as milk).
