Easter Sunday Desserts: How To Make Easy And Healthy Easter Treats

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Easter Sunday is only a few days away. It is time to plan out some delicious and healthy Easter desserts. Hearn Kirkwood is here to help you make quick, fresh and easy desserts! This article will provide you a list of healthy Easter dessert recipes we enjoy during this special time of year.

Often during Easter parents believe the only dessert available for children are sugar infested ones. You do not have to feed your children chocolate eggs, chocolate bars and peeps for dessert. Provide them delectable Easter desserts that are healthy for them.

Children that only receive sugar filled candy for Easter dessert usually experience sugar rush, tummy aches, acne and gain a few extra pounds.

When you provide children healthy Easter desserts, your children won’t feel bloated or experience bad affects from candy consumption.

You can make healthy Easter treats  for kids and adults alike by using light ingredients such as fresh fruit, whole wheat flour and brown sugar.

Here are some healthy and delicious treats you can create this Easter:

-Light Key Lime Bars. The key lime bars are like mini pies. The benefits of key lime bars is that they are low calorie bars and low fat. You can serve them with frozen beverages for a real treat. To make 12 key lime bars follow the following recipe:

Ingredients for the key lime bar crust

-1 cup  of all purpose flour
-1 cup of whole wheat flour
-1/2 cup of powdered sugar
-3/4 cup canola oil
For the key lime filling use the following ingredients:

-4 large eggs
-1 and 1/2 cups of sugar
-6 tablespoons of all purpose flour
-1/4 cups of lime juice
-Confectioner sugar (as a garnish)
-2 tablespoons of lime zest

Preheat the oven at 350 degrees F and put your key lime in a greased 9 X 13 inch cake pan. Bake the crust for at 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Next, pour the filling into the crust. The filling should include the flour, lime juice and zest. Bake the filling over the crust for 24 minutes. Sprinkle the powdered sugar on your treats and you will be good to go.

Whole Wheat Raspberry Bar. This is the perfect fruit bar for Easter. It features whole heat flour, brown sugar, and almonds. The kids will surely be full and satisfied after two or more bars. You will need the following ingredients:
-2 cups of whole wheat flour.
-1/2 cups of dark brown sugar
-1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon
-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
-1/4 teaspoon of salt
-1/4 cup of chopped almonds
-1 large egg
-1/4 cup of canola oil
-3/4 cup of fresh raspberries
-1/2 cup low sugar raspberry preserves
Pop your raspberry bars into a 350 degree oven. We recommend using a greased 8 x 8 inch baking dish. The crust of the raspberry bars should be baked for 10 minutes. Once the crust is baked, top it off with fresh raspberries and the raspberry preserve. Cover the fruit with crumble and bake for an additional 18 minutes. This will beat any chocolate bar.

Some other great dessert ideas are the following:

-Creamy rice pudding
-Pineapple upside down cupcakes
-Chocolate hazelnut cookies ( only 11 grams of carbs each).
-Peanut Butter and Jam Macaroons

Christmas Cookie Baking Tips And Cookie Recipes

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

Christmas just isn’t Christmas without Christmas cookies. Enjoy making healthy, holiday sweets with your kids this Christmas. Hearn Kirkwood has some great baking tips to share to make this years batch of Christmas cookies your all time favorite.

Here are some Christmas cookies you can bake this Christmas:

  1. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer Cookies. These adorable cookies can be made with Pillsbury’s Simply Peanut Butter cookie dough. The cookies only need to bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Once they are fresh out the oven, push mini chocolate pretzels at the tops to add antlers. The eyes and nose can be made with M&M Minis. It should make a batch of 24 cookies.
  2. Snowflake Cookies. This is a great way to let it snow indoors. These are chocolate chip cookies with snowflake sprinkles and morsel toppers.
  3. Snowman Pops. These holiday treats can be used as holiday presents. Simply put your favorite batch of cook mix into your popper machine and decorate your bake pops into your favorite kinds of snow people such as frosty the snowman.

No matter what cookies you decide to make for the holidays, make sure you follow these simple tips to make sure your cookie baking is a success:

  1. Carefully read your cookie recipe. This may sound like common sense but many people take only a quick glance over the ingredients and start on the recipe right away. It is important to read the cookie recipe in full before starting on the recipe because some preparation may include ingredients sitting for hours or dough make have to sit overnight.
  2. Never grease cookie sheets. Why? Grease is hard to clean up. Instead, purchase parchment paper and avoid non-stick sprays because non-stick spray can destroy pans overtime.
  3. Never use flour to roll out your cookies. If you plan on using light colored dough, roll out your cookies using powdered sugar. If you are cooking chocolate cookies, roll them out with cocoa powder. If you don’t want to use a powder, use waxed paper.
  4. Refrigerate cookies. Why? Certain types of cookie dough are easier to form and bake when refrigerated. The cold temperature of your fridge will firm up your dough and make slicing rolls as easy as pie. Refrigerating also works wonders on shaping cookies. If you freeze cookies, make sure they are wrapped tightly to prevent freezer burn. They will have to thaw at room temperature prior to serving.

In the article a girl named Breanna Bond weighed 186 pounds at 9 years of age. With a workout routine and good eating habits, Bond has dropped 65 pounds in under a year.

Your children can do the same!

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in the USA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that roughly 12.5 million children ages 2 –19 are obese.

Excessive weight is nothing to take lightly. It can lead to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and psycho-social issues.

One way to help your overweight children lose weight is by following the traffic light diet.

The traffic light diet allows your child to eat plenty of green vegetables (green light food), lean protein (yellow light foods) and light sweets/ simple carbohydrates (red light foods).

The green light foods are less than 20 calories per serving. The yellow foods are very rich in nutrient and low in calories.

The red color foods are high in fat and sugar. They should be consumed in moderation.

Healthy eating patterns make for a healthier lifestyle.

Here are some traffic light foods you should add to your diet today:

-      Potatoes

-      Lean meats

-      Pasta

-      Fruits

-      Low-fat milk

Healthy Eating: How To Slim Down Thanksgiving Recipes

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Are you searching for ways to enjoy your Thanksgiving feast without gaining excessive weight? If yes, you’re not alone and there is way to thin you’re your Thanksgiving feast without removing the deliciousness from your meal.

Remember, Thanksgiving only happens once a year but gaining weight during the holiday season can make you gain a pound or more throughout the year.

To keep off the weight, be active during and after Thanksgiving dinner. Exercising more than you eat can easily help you burn off extra calories. You can exercise by walking, running or participating in a fitness routine ahead of Thanksgiving. It will be easier to do this when you make fitness a family activity.

Have the family take a walk with you early Thanksgiving Day and one right after dinner. You will not only keep the weight off but you will be enjoying quality time with your family.

Another great idea you can try for Thanksgiving is to eat a small breakfast the morning of Thanksgiving so you will control your appetite better. A good breakfast for Thanksgiving can be an egg with whole-wheat toast. You may want to eat a bowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk.

The more protein and fiber you have in your Thanksgiving breakfast, the more you’ll be able to take the edge off your appetite during the big feast.

Next, reduce the fat, sugar and calories in your traditional Thanksgiving recipes. Your recipes will not taste bad by reducing some sugar and fat because most recipes have more sugar and fat than is necessary.

You can cut down fat and sugar in the following ways:

1.   Use fat-free chicken broth to baste your turkey and make gravy for your meals.

2.   Use fruit purees as sugar substitutes and reduce the oil and butter in your bake goods.

3.   Use plain yogurt and fat-free sour cream to make creamy dips, mashed potatoes and Thanksgiving casseroles.

After making your Thanksgiving meal, advise yourself and your guests to fill their plates with small portions of their holiday favorites rather than omitting favorite foods from the plate. When you’re done eating, don’t go up for seconds. Instead, make a plate of leftovers to eat the next day. Save room in your belly for dessert after dinner. You always eat more of your favorites the next day.

Remember, as long as you keep your portions small, you can enjoy anything that’s being served. White Turkey meat, vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pies are all safe bets.

Follow these steps and get the freshest food for Thanksgiving from Hearn Kirkwood.

How A Tomato A Day Can Keep The Doctor Away

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

If you’re searching for a great way to improve your health, consider eating a tomato a day to keep the doctor away.

Recent studies show tomato helps cut down your risk of having a stroke. In fact, men who had very high levels of the antioxidant lycopene found in tomatoes had fewer strokes than men that had very low levels of lycopene in their blood.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s national nutrient database states, Lycopene can be found in its highest concentrations in cooked tomato products. This can include tomato paste, puree and sauce.

Try ready to serve marina sauce to have a serving of more than 31,000 micrograms of lycopene.

Even if you are not a fan of the tomato, you can get your doses of lycopene from watermelon, grapefruit, papaya and mango.

The U.S dietary guidelines have no recommendations for the specific amount of lycopene you should consume.

However, the standard fruit and vegetable intake for dietary is 2 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. But lycopene also has the ability to cut the risk of prostate and other types of cancer. Exercising and not smoking helps cut stroke risk as well.

Lycopene is able to provide these great health benefits because it can reduce inflammation and prevent blood clots that would otherwise cause ischemic stroke.
