Family Dinners: How To Purchase A Delicious Ham

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

No matter if you’re getting ready for a family Easter Dinner or simply a Family gathering, a baked ham is crowd pleaser for dinner. This article will provide you tips on how to buy a ham.

Most hams in the market are sold fully cooked to make your job as the cook simple. All you have to do is warm it up, slice it and serve. There are three important parts of making a delicious ham – scoring the ham, whipping up a sauce, and making/applying the glaze.

A ham is made from the hind leg of pork. For an Easter ham, you want the pork to be cured with brine, smoked and fully cooked.

A ham is brine by being injected with water, salt, sugar, phosphates and nitrites. This will help you make your pork flavorful and lean in texture.

If you want the best grade of ham you should buy a whole or half ham. A half ham can feed up to 14 people.

For a quality ham, come to Hearn Kirkwood.

National Pancake Week: How To Make Fun and Delicious Pancake Shapes

Monday, February 20th, 2012

It is national pancake week! If you are a pancake lover, then this article will provide you fun and creative information on how to make pancake shapes. Read to make breakfast fun and enjoyable this week!

When meals are made creatively, it encourages fussy eaters to eat and learn at the same time (make breakfast a geometry or reading lesson). Being an artistic chef for breakfast is a moderately easy duty. It only takes the following items:

Ø Metal geometric-shaped cookie cutters

Ø Non-stick cooking spray

Ø Flat griddle

Ø Pancake batter

Ø Plastic squeeze bottle

Ø Metal Spatula

Ø Plate

Ø Butter Knife

The first thing you need to do is spray your cookie cutters with your non-stick cooking spray. Next, pre-heat your griddle to the temperature suggested by your pancake mix. You should use only a griddle with a flat cooking surface.

Once the griddle is heated, place the cookie cutters on the griddle. Make sure the cutting side is face down.

Pour the pancake batter into your plastic squeeze bottle and squeeze the pancake butter into the cookie cutters until the halfway point.

You do not want to fill the pancake batter anymore than halfway because the batter will flow over the cutters. Cook the pancakes and remove the cookie cutters with the pancakes still attached to it. Use your metal spatula to scrape your pancakes off the griddle and onto to your plates.

Once on the plates, remove the cookie cutter molds from the pancakes.  Place pancakes on uncooked side back on the griddle to brown (cookie cutter molds should not be attached).

Have a happy national pancake week! Do not forget the syrup!

Buy your fresh fruits for your pancakes, as well as your pancake batter, from Hearn Kirkwood.

4 Foods To Eat To Improve Your Skin Complexion

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Looking for ways to combat acne and improve your complexion? If yes, this article will help you eat better to improve the health of your skin with 4 skin super foods. Read to get started on your perfect skin diet.

Almonds

Almonds are seeds but most people believe they are nuts. Almonds are full of vitamin E, which helps block the sun from harming your skin. If you consume 20 almonds a day, you will suffer from sunburn less. Vitamin E helps protect your skin cells from UV light and helps prevent skin cell damage from environment elements. If you do not like almonds, try 2 Tbsp of peanut butter.

Carrots

Carrots are wonderful vegetables. They can clear up breakouts because of vitamin A. Vitamin A prevents overproduction of cells in your skin’s out layer. Without vitamin A, dead cells and sebum will clog your pores. Vitamin A is also wonderful because it reduces the chances of skin-cancer cells developing. You should eat 16 baby carrots a day. If you do not enjoy eating carrots, have 1 cup of meal or cheddar cheese instead.

 Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is filled with Flavonols, antioxidants that reduce roughness in your skin and protect your skin from sun damage. Dark chocolate gives you better skin texture and makes your skin more resistant to UV rays. Eat a few ounces of dark chocolate a day. If you are not a fan of dark chocolate, eat blackberries, blueberries, cherries, and raspberries.

 Spinach

Eat spinach as much as you can to prevent cancer. Leafy greens prevent skin tumors. They also repair and maintain your DNA, making it easier for your skin cells to renew themselves. Not to mention, the water in spinach and other green make your skin wrinkle less because the water penetrates cell membranes. If you do not enjoy eating spinach, eat collard greens.

5 Ways To Grocery Shop Healthier

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Are you looking for ways to make your grocery shopping healthier? If yes, we are here to help by providing five tips on how to navigate the supermarket in the most effective way. Read below to start making smart choices in the grocery store.

To cook healthy meals, you need the right ingredients on hand in your kitchen. Most grocery shoppers do not have the time to look carefully at food labels and find the best nutritious foods at great buys.

Here are just a few ways to shop and eat better:

 Plan Your Meals Per Week

Before you step into the grocery store, have a game plan. Figure out what meals you want for the week or two weeks. List ingredients you will need to make these meals. Make sure you check out weekly discounts in grocery ads and never go to the grocery store hungry. When you go to the grocery store hungry, you setup yourself to spend more.

Shop For Variety

When shopping, make sure you shop for food included on the food pyramid such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, lean meat, fish, poultry, beans and nuts. Buy food with the most nutritious values. For example, you should buy sweet potatoes over white potatoes because sweet potatoes are richer in beta-carotene.

If you enjoy eating something new every week, pick a new fruit or vegetable for you diet every week. Eat plenty of produce.

Look for the Least Processed Foods

When it comes to breads, cereals and pasta, buy the whole grains with the least amount of processing. Oatmeal is a great whole grain to eat.

Eat Fish Two Times a Week

Fish is affordable and an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. If you are not a fish eater, choose lean cuts of meat such as round, top, sirloin and tenderloin. If you prefer chicken, pick skinless poultry.

Do not forget your Dairy

Dairy foods are a great source of calcium and vitamin D you need for bone growth. You should have three servings a day (this can include yogurts and cheeses as well as milk).

Eating the right foods in moderation will help your teenager maintain health and keep a balanced mood. Teenagers need specific nutrients to function successfully during the day. In fact, the most important meal is breakfast for a teenager. The body needs a daily supply of the following:

Ø Protein. This makes up components of muscles, hair, nails, skin, eyes and internal organs such as the heart and brain. Protein helps teens grow and keeps red blood cells healthy. Some great protein foods are eggs, cheese, soy products, fish, nuts, chicken, beef and pork. If you are a vegetarian, a great way to get the appropriate amount of protein is through consuming soy products, beans and nuts.

Ø Carbohydrates.  They are the body’s main source of energy and help the nervous system, muscles, and internal organs function. You can get enough carbohydrates by having fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans in your diet.

Ø Fats. They are the body’s energy reserve and keep your body warm. Fats have nutrients of vitamins A, D, E and K. Fatty tissues will protect the body’s vital organs from trauma and temperature changes.

Here are some great meal ideas for healthy, quick and easy consumption for your teen:

 Breakfast

Ø Have a soy shake. You only need a cup of vanilla, chocolate, soy milk or milk from a cow. Blend this with banana and 2 ice cubes. This will improve your mood and how you function during the day.

Ø Eat Oatmeal. Oatmeal with chopped nuts, raisins, banana and strawberries is a great source of protein.

Ø Drink Orange Juice. This will give you the calcium and vitamin C you need to start your day.

Ø Eat Fresh Fruit. Some great fresh fruit to eat first thing in the morning are oranges, pears, strawberries, bananas, peaches, and blueberries. Eat it with yogurt and granola.

 Lunch

Ø Have an egg salad sandwich on wheat bread with lettuce and tomato.

Ø Eat veggie burgers and veggie pizza.

Ø Have a turkey, chicken, tofu, cheese, or vegetable turkey wrap.

How To Have Healthier Eating Habits In 2012

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Are you trying to have healthier eating habits for this New Year? If yes, we are here to help you eat healthier this year with nutrition and food must-dos. Read below to get started.

Cook And Eat More Homemade Meals

Not only is cooking from scratch more rewarding, but it is healthier to eat from home than away from home. More than half the meals we consume in the United States of America are eaten outside of the home. Meals that are not homemade are larger in portions and lack healthy ingredients. Homemade foods are more likely to taste delicious and be healthier. If you fear your skills in the kitchen, try buying an easy to use cookbook.

Buy Local

When you buy local you have healthier selections and you increase your chances of finding quality goods. Look up a market that provides an abundance of quality local goods.

Look at the Labels

The best way to eat healthier is to look at the ingredients of what you are eating. When shopping for food, do your best to buy goods that are labeled organic products. Do your best to avoid foods consisting of corn, soy, cottonseed and canola by products. Examples of canola byproducts are oil, starch and flour.
