How can you prevent yourself from overeating Thanksgiving Day?

Thanksgiving Family meals

Do you believe you’re more inclined to over eat during the holidays? You’re not alone. Luckily there are actions you can take to prevent yourself from over eating during the big holidays and we are here to help you prevent yourself from going overboard.

You can start on your journey to not over eat this holiday season by confirming to yourself that one day of over eating will not make you obese or prevent you from losing weight.

No, skipping meals is not going to help keep you from over eating. It will actually make you hungrier during meals. No, quitting before you give your diet your 100% will not do you any good. You need to learn how to effectively perform weight maintenance.

Here’s how you should get your day started during the holiday to prevent yourself from overeating:

  1. Eat breakfast first thing in the morning.  Breakfast is the meal of the day that truly gets your metabolism up and running.
  2.  Drink plenty of water. Drinking water will help you feel full and prevent dehydration.
  3. Eat plenty of vegetables. Eating a salad during lunch will prevent you from feeling groggy after your big Thanksgiving meal. Food coma prepares you to over eat not just twice but three or more times.
  4. Eat snacks.  Healthy snacks like fruits and nuts can help you keep your metabolism fast and prevent overeating.
  5. Eat more homemade meals. There’s nothing quite like a homemade meal. Home cooking is considered clean food, if prepared with health in mind. Instead of feeding the family ham and other pork products this holiday season, try making broiled fish, roasted potatoes and serve green vegetables. Don’t forget to dish out quinoa with your homemade meals to prevent bloating.

As for a serving yourself and guests a healthy beverage this holiday season, try coffee. Drinking coffee is one of the healthiest choices you can make during the holiday season.

How is coffee a healthy beverage?

For one, coffee has antioxidants and a handful of nutrients to keep you healthy and energized throughout the day. Coffee is capable of keeping you energized during the day because it features the stimulant caffeine that absorbs itself into your bloodstream and travels to your brain to block adenosine (which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter). As a result, the brain has the opportunity to improve your memory, temperament, and cognitive function.

Here is a list of nutrients that you receive every day in your cup of joe:

-Riboflavin from Vitamin B2

-Pantothenic Acid from Vitamin B5

-Manganese

-Potassium

-Magnesium and Niacin from Vitamin B3

By drinking between 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day, you can lower your risk of experiencing the following health problems:

-Type II Diabetes

-Alzheimer’s Disease

-Dementia

-Parkinson’s Disease

-Chronic Depression

-Liver Cancer

-Colorectal Cancer

How to slim down with healthy meals

Tuesday, September 24th, 2013

Why is Breakfast so important?

It’s fall and the weather is just right to start on a great workout plan and stick to it. With the appropriate workout for you and a healthy diet, you can slim down in no time. It’s all about exercise and healthy eating.

If you think you have to waste hours and hours working out, think again. You only have to dedicate 30 minutes every day to being active.

As for healthy eating, Hearn Kirkwood has some tips and tricks to share with you that will help you easily cut back calories, sodium and fat in your diet.

For one, put down the hot sauce. Yes, we understand those that enjoy a little spice in their meals cannot resist using hot sauce. It’s delicious but there are ways to spice up your life without all that extra sodium.

Instead of using hot sauce, use pepper. The less sodium in your meal, the easier time you’ll have losing weight.

Use fresh peppers, pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to spice up your life. These peppers only contain 35 milligrams of sodium for every teaspoon. That’s only 2% of what’s recommend to have of sodium a day. You should never go over 2,300 milligrams of sodium in a day.

Next, make a breakfast plan that includes plenty of protein. Breakfast is the last meal you want to miss during your day. When we miss breakfast, we put ourselves at risk of gaining too much weight over the course of a year.

Eat breakfast plentiful of protein to reduce your hunger pangs throughout the day. You can receive protein through such breakfast food as eggs, lean sausage and oats.

What’s your next concern? It’s dinnertime.

And you know what’s the best thing you can do for dinner? You can brush your teeth. Yes, brushing your teeth can help you lose weight.

How?

It’s our nature to overeat at nighttime as a way to kill time. So we snack and snack until we are ready for bed. This snacking jumps up our intake of calories.

To stop yourself from snacking, brush your teeth. Your mouth feeling minty will keep you from eating because you will not like the idea of having to brush your teeth a second time before bed. Sleep in its self will help you lose weight if you get at least 7 to 8 hours.

When you get up in the morning, go work out. You’ll sleep better at night.

But most importantly, drink plenty of water. If you drink water before every meal, you will help yourself eat at least 75 fewer calories every time.

We recommend drinking warm lemon water for breakfast and dinner to clean out your system, while giving your body the water it needs.

Here is how you should plate your meals:

  1. Use the 25-25-50 rule to make sure your meal has 25% carbs, 25% lean protein and 50% vegetables/ fruits. Some common carbs are beans and root vegetables. Chicken is a lean protein. As for vegetables and fruits, eat to your hearts content. Get colorful with it.
  2. Never skip a meal. Anytime you skip a meal, you force your body to slow down your metabolism by at least 20%. This will make you overeat during your next meal.
  3. Make breakfast, lunch and dinner a different meal everyday. Your body will get bored with your appetite if you don’t mix it up.
  4. Find a support system. Those that diet together lose up to 50% more weight than those that dieted solo.
  5. Don’t label anything a forbidden food. You can eat what you want to eat as long as you eat in moderation.

Summer Slim down: How to lose weight with Breakfast Foods

Monday, July 8th, 2013

Looking to lose weight fast this summer? You can start with breakfast. Healthy breakfast foods can help you lose weight in no time and Hearn Kirkwood is here to help you get started.

The way you lose weight with breakfast foods is to eat low calorie breakfasts every day of the week. What is considered low calorie breakfasts foods? Oatmeal, peanut butter, yogurt, eggs and raspberries are just some of the many foods you may want to consider.

Although some believe skipping breakfast is a great strategy to lose weight, it’s not. Studies have shown that skipping breakfast does not help people on a quest to slim down.

Instead, regular breakfast eaters are more likely to slim down fast and remain leaner.

Mix up your breakfast food every day. Here are some great foods you can stack up on right at Hearn Kirkwood:

-Butter milk oatcakes with your favorite fruit toppings. It’s an excellent breakfast food for its high fiber and 100% whole grains. Don’t add butter. Simply eat it with a maple syrup.

-Eat a bagel with nut butter and banana. It’s quick for those on the go and you can eat it with easy.

-Eat granola bars. Muffins are great energy foods. Try lemon raspberry muffins, they taste best warm.

-Eat plenty of oatmeal. It’s not a magical breakfast food but it has plenty of high fiber to keep you going during the day. It will also slowly help your body get use to foods that are not loaded with sugar.

To slim down, it’s important to eat high fiber foods to help your digestive system pass out foods the intestines cannot absorb. Healthier bowel movements, means you won’t experience constipation.

Women should have at least 21 grams of fiber every day. Men should have at least 30 grams of fiber per day.

You need only 1 cup serving of oatmeal to start on the right track. We recommend using low fat milk or skim milk, if you enjoy milk with your oatmeal.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits in the morning such as:

-Blueberries

-Raspberries

-Strawberries

National Pancake Week: How To Make Fun and Delicious Pancake Shapes

Monday, February 20th, 2012

It is national pancake week! If you are a pancake lover, then this article will provide you fun and creative information on how to make pancake shapes. Read to make breakfast fun and enjoyable this week!

When meals are made creatively, it encourages fussy eaters to eat and learn at the same time (make breakfast a geometry or reading lesson). Being an artistic chef for breakfast is a moderately easy duty. It only takes the following items:

Ø Metal geometric-shaped cookie cutters

Ø Non-stick cooking spray

Ø Flat griddle

Ø Pancake batter

Ø Plastic squeeze bottle

Ø Metal Spatula

Ø Plate

Ø Butter Knife

The first thing you need to do is spray your cookie cutters with your non-stick cooking spray. Next, pre-heat your griddle to the temperature suggested by your pancake mix. You should use only a griddle with a flat cooking surface.

Once the griddle is heated, place the cookie cutters on the griddle. Make sure the cutting side is face down.

Pour the pancake batter into your plastic squeeze bottle and squeeze the pancake butter into the cookie cutters until the halfway point.

You do not want to fill the pancake batter anymore than halfway because the batter will flow over the cutters. Cook the pancakes and remove the cookie cutters with the pancakes still attached to it. Use your metal spatula to scrape your pancakes off the griddle and onto to your plates.

Once on the plates, remove the cookie cutter molds from the pancakes.  Place pancakes on uncooked side back on the griddle to brown (cookie cutter molds should not be attached).

Have a happy national pancake week! Do not forget the syrup!

Buy your fresh fruits for your pancakes, as well as your pancake batter, from Hearn Kirkwood.

How To Help Your Teen Eat Healthy

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Are you looking for ways to help your teenager son or daughter eat healthier this year? If yes, we are here to help by providing you information and ideas on how your teen can eat healthier, quicker and make easier meals. Read below to get started.

Eating the right foods in moderation will help your teenager maintain health and keep a balanced mood. Teenagers need specific nutrients to function successfully during the day. In fact, the most important meal is breakfast for a teenager. The body needs a daily supply of the following:

Ø Protein. This makes up components of muscles, hair, nails, skin, eyes and internal organs such as the heart and brain. Protein helps teens grow and keeps red blood cells healthy. Some great protein foods are eggs, cheese, soy products, fish, nuts, chicken, beef and pork. If you are a vegetarian, a great way to get the appropriate amount of protein is through consuming soy products, beans and nuts.

Ø Carbohydrates.  They are the body’s main source of energy and help the nervous system, muscles, and internal organs function. You can get enough carbohydrates by having fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans in your diet.

Ø Fats. They are the body’s energy reserve and keep your body warm. Fats have nutrients of vitamins A, D, E and K. Fatty tissues will protect the body’s vital organs from trauma and temperature changes.

Here are some great meal ideas for healthy, quick and easy consumption for your teen:

 Breakfast

Ø Have a soy shake. You only need a cup of vanilla, chocolate, soy milk or milk from a cow. Blend this with banana and 2 ice cubes. This will improve your mood and how you function during the day.

Ø Eat Oatmeal. Oatmeal with chopped nuts, raisins, banana and strawberries is a great source of protein.

Ø Drink Orange Juice. This will give you the calcium and vitamin C you need to start your day.

Ø Eat Fresh Fruit. Some great fresh fruit to eat first thing in the morning are oranges, pears, strawberries, bananas, peaches, and blueberries. Eat it with yogurt and granola.

 Lunch

Ø Have an egg salad sandwich on wheat bread with lettuce and tomato.

Ø Eat veggie burgers and veggie pizza.

Ø Have a turkey, chicken, tofu, cheese, or vegetable turkey wrap.

 Dinner

ØPasta with pesto sauce, tomato sauce and vegetables is a great dinner meal.

Ø Have stir-fry vegetables with tofu, shrimp or chicken.

Ø Broil Salmon with vegetables.

5 Tips on How to Avoid Over Indulging During Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Are you looking for ways to make your Thanksgiving dinner a healthy choice? If yes, we are here to help by giving you five great tips on how to avoid overindulging. Read below to learn!

Thanksgiving promotes families to overboard with the calories and consumption, then regret it later. The temptations of gooey apple pie and dense sweet potatoes topped with melted marshmallows make it hard for most to be disciplined during dinner.

Here are five ways experts suggest you do to avoid over indulging on not so healthy foods during Thanksgiving:

Stick to Healthy Portions

Experts recommend that you have one plate of Thanksgiving food. They say it is all you need. Fill up half of your plate with vegetables, fruit, whole wheat roll, a quarter of mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, another quarter should go for the meats of turkey or ham. The more color to your plate, the better. Add leafy greens, carrots, bell peppers and beets to your veggie spread.

When you fill up on these types of food, you have a lower caloric density and a higher level of nutrition to serve your body. You will not only feel full but you will not be bloated or tired because it is a lighter, healthier and well-balanced meal.

As for dessert, pick fruit or pumpkin pies, they have fewer calories than chocolate or pecan pies.

Have Single Servings of the Most Unhealthy Foods

If you stick to single serving of the unhealthiest foods, you will avoid feeling bloated. Have a half of cup of mashed potatoes- that is the regular size of a cupcake. Have Turkey the size of your checkbook.

Eat before you indulge.

Make sure you do not starve yourself the whole day waiting for the big dinner. You are not saving room for your big meal but preparing yourself to over eat. Eat breakfast. Eat lunch. Have snacks. You will thank yourself later.

For more great tips on how to avoid overindulging, read this article from MyHealthyNewsDaily.com.
