How can I reduce my Sugar Intake?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

Sugar Products

Has your doctor told you, you’re eating too much sugar in your foods? It’s important that you listen to your doctor to prevent health problems and keep yourself fat. We are here to help you reduce your sugar intake by telling what foods and ingredients you should avoid eating

When we eat too much sugar, we can truly jeopardize  our health. It’s recommended that people limit their sugar intake to 50 grams per day when possible. When you go beyond 50 grams per day, you put yourself at risk of adding too many calories to your diet that makes your body age and become more vulnerable to disease and obesity.

Although fruit is very high in sugar, it’s not where the danger lies for most people.  If you are worried you’re eating too much fruit, consider eating 2 to 4 servings of your favorite fruit a day. It’s better to eat fresh fruit than drink juice containing fruit. Luckily, you don’t have to count fruit to your sugar count.

What should be counted toward your sugar intake?

The answer is sugar that you voluntarily add to your meals, sugar inside processed foods, sugar in beverages, and  any prepared foods that added sugar.

Here is a list of natural sugars you can enjoy:

  • Honey
  • Maple Syrup
  • Nectar

Anything that’s a concentrated sweetener should count as a sugar. You should avoid drinking too many soft drinks, sweetened teas and sport drinks as they use a great deal of artificial sweetening.

The best way to keep track of the amount of sugar you eat daily is to keep a record of foods you eat daily. How much sugar did you put in your morning coffee? Did you add any honey to your oatmeal today? Every bit of sugar counts.

Lay off the sweet desserts and snacks. Protect yourself from type 2 diabetes, don’t buy has many frozen desserts, candy and bake goods. The foods have so much sugar inside.

You can help wean yourself off of sugary foods by drinking plenty of water, eating healthy snacks throughout the day and avoiding fast foods.

Here’s why:

  1. You eat snacks throughout your day to prevent your body from feeling starved.
  2. Drink water to help your hypothalamus control your appetite.

For more information, read The Dangers of a Sugar Filled Diet and How to Avoid It.

We understand how tempting it is to eat junk food, but there are plenty of healthy and delicious foods you can enjoy in your everyday diet. You can shop your healthy food at an affordable price right here at Hearn Kirkwood.

The Gluten Free Diet: Is it the right choice for me?

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Gluten Free Diet Tips

Do you need to modify your current food diet to a healthier food diet? It’s not never an easy transition, but it is impossible to achieve. A fitness diet that’s increasing its following is the gluten free diet.

What is the gluten free diet?

The gluten free diet is a diet that removes protein gluten from one’s every day diet. Gluten is commonly found in grains ( wheat, barley, rye).

The gluten free diet was originally created to help people suffering from celiac disease to treat themselves. People that have celiac disease experience inflammation in their small intestines because of gluten.

When people start and stick to a gluten free diet, they can prevent complications relating to inflammation of the small intestines.

Important facts you should know about the Gluten Free Diet

Changing to a gluten free diet is no easy transition. It takes time to successfully make the big change because the food diet restrictions can make you feel initially deprived of food. To help you with your diet transition, keep focused on what you can eat rather than you cannot eat.

Fortunately,  you can find plenty of gluten free products at Hearn Kirkwood – that includes gluten free bread and pasta. If you are not very familiar with the gluten free diet, you should consult a dietitian prior to beginning your gluten free diet to make sure you maintain a healthy balanced diet.

Here is a list of naturally gluten free foods:

  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Eggs
  • Fresh meat, fish and poultry ( do not bread, batter, or marinate)
  • Fresh Fruits/ Vegetables
  • Dairy products

As for grains and starches you can include in your gluten-free diet, try soy, cornmeal, flax, quinoa, and rice.

Do not drink or eat foods that have barley, rye, wheat or  triticale. More importantly read the labels before you buy groceries. If it says gluten-free or made with gluten free grain, it should be safe for your diet. Note by starting a gluten free diet, you will have less nutritional foods to eat.

Gluten free foods offer a rich source of B vitamins, iron and fiber. You can lower your risk of heart disease and cancer.

Food Energy Boosters

Do you find yourself exhausted at the end of the day? Are you in need of a little extra energy? We are here to help you out by giving you a list of energy packed foods.

Breakfast Energy Boosters:

Whole Grain Cereal. When you eat it with low-fat milk, you can energize yourself for the entire day because whole grain cereal with low-fat milk has a perfect blend of protein and fiber. You will definitely feel the energy when you eat your whole grain cereal after working out. If you are trying to add more muscle to your figure, buy a cereal that includes iron ( which forms hemoglobin). Add some fresh strawberries and you will have a delicious and healthy breakfast while getting the vitamin C you need for the day.

Brown Rice. This type of rice can help boost your energy metabolism because it provides an excellent amount of magnesium and only takes 1 cup of cooked brown rice to give you that energy boost. For women 1 cup of rice can provide 1/4 of the magnesium you need in a day. For men, brown rice can provide 1/5 of the  magnesium needed in a day.

As for beverages you can drink, try coffee and  green tea.  The green teach has a rich source of the amino acid L-theanine which can help you feel extra alert without experiencing the jitters you may have with drinking coffee.  For coffee lovers, a cup of joe can reduce your likelihood of feeling depressed by 15 percent.

Lunch Energy Boosters

Salmon. This type of fish has a rich source of Omega-3s. What’s so great about Omega-3 fatty acids? Omega 3s can lower your risk of experiencing serious health problems. We highly recommend eating wild salmon because wild salmon has a great source of vitamins, minerals and Omega-3s.

Kale. It’s a vegetable full of vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and minerals your body needs daily.

How can I improve my immune system with power food?

Wednesday, February 5th, 2014
power foods that boost up your immune system

How are you strengthening your immune system?

We have 6 weeks of winter left. If you are feeling sick and tired, it’s time to boost your immune system with power food.

How can I improve my physical energy?

You can improve your health and overall energy by building up your immune system with healthy food. Remember, you are what you eat. This next piece of advice may sound strange but  singing and eating healthy food can help you boost your immune system, according to research.

If you’re not big on singing, you can watch something that will make you laugh as you enjoy a hearty breakfast. It’s healthy for you to get a good laugh during the day because laughter  activates T-cells while increasing the production of your antibodies. It’s an easy and effective way to develop and maintain a strong immune system.

Next, you need to help yourself de-stress. Find a place where you can calmly eat and you will see your immune system and overall happiness improve.

As for meal times, we recommend eating soluble fibers in every meal. What are soluble fibers? Soluble fibers are foods that improve the effectiveness of probiotics. Some great soluble fibers are bananas, artichokes, onions and leeks.

More importantly, don’t forget to eat your greens.  Green vegetables can boost your immune system on the daily. In fact, green vegetables strengthen your immune cells in your gut.

To help you get started on your greener diet, stock up on kale and broccoli. You may even want to get adventurous and try crispy soy roasted kale chips.

From there, you will only need to keep track of your sugar  consumption because sugar addition can interfere with consumption of healthy foods.

On average Americans consume nearly a quarter of daily calories in the form of sugar. Consuming that amount of sugar or more can increase your risk of heart disease.

Large consumption of sugar is categorized as 500 calories a day or more of sugar. It’s recommended that a person only has 7 teaspoons of sugar a day ( refined sugars), anything beyond that is a danger to your health, including your immune system.

You can control what you eat by reading the labels. You can find all you need at Hearn Kirkwood.

Hearn Kirkwood is a privately held Food Service Distributor specializing in produce, meat, poultry, dairy, and fresh seafood. What are must have winter snowstorm foods?

Monday, January 27th, 2014

Winter snow storm foods

A big snowstorm is expected to hit the East Coast this week. How do you prepare for a snowfall forecast? Most would say they head to the grocery store, but what food should you purchase to truly be ready for a major snowstorm?

Anytime a winter precipitation makes it’s way into the region, it’s important to stock up on food supplies and water. You never know how much snowfall can come or whether you’ll be able to get out of your home with ease. You may experience significant freezing rain or heavy snowfall. When this happens, Cabin fever sets in but Cabin fever is a little bit easier to get through when you know your fridge is stocked with healthy and delicious food during a big snowstorm.

To help you survive the big snowstorm, we are providing you a list of the best snowstorm foods to stock up on. When a snowstorm is on the way, your food stock should last at least 7 days per household member.

For starters you should purchase some canned fruits and vegetables to make sure you and your family keep up with your daily meals of fruits and vegetables.

Next, you need to stock up on fresh water. You should have at least 5 gallons of water in the case of an emergency. You should also purchase hot cocoa and coffee to keep warm and alert during the winter storm. This is especially true if you or your family will be shoveling snow throughout the winter storm. It’s highly recommended that you store hot cocoa and coffee in thermo bottles to keep the entire family warm.

Thirdly, you should do your best to stock up on non-perishable foods for the best results. Remember, the reason you are stocking up on food is to fuel your body and maintain energy during this severe weather. You should also stock up on high protein foods. This is the time where you will want to eat high quality food to keep up your energy and also reduce your need to eat several meals or snacks at a time. Having good sources of nutrients and fiber is what you want.

Here are some foods you should definitely have on your winter storm grocery list:

-Peanut Butter (great source of healthy fats and protein).

-Whole Wheat Crackers (perfect for making light sandwiches and appetizers)

-Nuts (make for very healthy snacks)

-Granola Bars (perfect source of carbohydrates)

-Dried fruits like raisins to provide your body a good source of potassium and dietary fiber.

-Fish/ Chicken/Turkey. This lean meat will provide you essential protein and last as long as six months when placed in the freezer.

-Canned vegetables: green beans, carrots and peas can complete any meal while providing the essential nutrients you and your family need.

-Powdered milk (it will provide you a great source of calcium and vitamin D when you’re worried your milk will go bad before the winter storm is over).

When should I hit the grocery store prior to the start of the snowstorm?

The best time for you to go grocery shopping is between 5pm and 9pm. If you cannot go to the grocery store during that period, go bright in early one morning to avoid crowds.

To be well prepared for the upcoming winter storm, grocery shop at Hearn Kirkwood.
