Are you worried about making a Family Thanksgiving meal full of high calorie recipes? You are not alone. Plenty of families prefer to watch their calories during the big holiday feast. We are here to help you make a low calorie Thanksgiving feast by providing you healthy choice recipes and healthy alternatives to the traditional Thanksgiving meal entrees and side dishes.
There are ways to make a delicious Thanksgiving Feast that only includes 500 calories or less to help you and your Thanksgiving guests stay healthy and trim this holiday. The average Thanksgiving dinner in the United States includes 4,500 calories and at least 229 grams of fat. The Caloric Control Council collected this data.
If you don’t know how unhealthy that is to your family, the amount of calories and grams of fat included in a typical Thanksgiving dinner is 3 days worth of food. How do all these calories and fat end up in our Thanksgiving meals? Most high calories and fat come from butter, cream and white bread used in making our favorite Thanksgiving recipes.
Here are meals you can make to have a 500-calorie healthy but tasty Thanksgiving dinner:
-Herb Roasted Turkey, 3oz of light meat. This is only 140 calories with 3 grams of fat.
-Apple Cider Gravy only has 20 calories and has no fat. Traditional Thanksgiving Turkey has 50 calories and 2 grams of fat.
-Vegetable and fruit stuffing with 78 calories and 1 gram of fat. Traditional Thanksgiving stuffing usually has 180 calories and 9 grams of fat.
-Roasted Root vegetables (82 calories and 2 grams of fat). It’s a far better choice than mashed potatoes, which include 220 calories and 8 grams of fat.
-Steamed green beans or any other green vegetable. It only has 15 calories. No fat!
-Roasted squash soup is 128 calories and 3 grams of fat.
As for desserts and side dishes, here is what we can recommend:
-Glazed sweet potatoes are healthier than making candied yams
-Serve mashed butternut casserole rather than mashed potatoes
-Serve fresh cranberry sauce with vegan pumpkin cheese cake (rather than pecan pie)
-And you cannot go wrong with vegan mushroom gravy.
