Mile Stones...
1946 - Produce Purveyor, located in Baltimore's Downtown Produce Market.
1958 - Began distribution of a full line of Kraft products - groceries, cheeses, dressings, etc.
1962 - Added distribution of frozen and refrigerated products
1966 - Began heavy concentration of convenience items. Health Care became a major focus
1977 - Opened our Precut Fruit & Vegetable Division
1978 - Received I.D. Magazine's Innovator of the Year Award
1979 - Kraft went their own way - we began filling the role of a full line distributor
1981 - Dropped full line and returned to produce specialist concept
1982 - Opened new Processed Produce Plant
1982 - Golbon Distributor of the Year
1984 - Purchased Gilco Meat Company. Adding a complete line of boxed and cut to order items. Awarded USDA status by December 1984
1986 - Received I.D. Magazine's Innovator Award
1988 - Opened Fresh Seafood Division to round out perishable line
1989 - Built USDA kitchen to begin production of fresh and frozen hors d'oeuvres, soups, entrees, wet salads, etc.
1990 - Added boxed and fresh cut chicken to product mix
1991 - Received I.D. Magazine's Innovator Award
1991 - Founding member of Pro*Act, LLC
1994 - Built Bay Harbor Seafood Facility to ensure quality and integrity of our product
1996 - Added additional space to USDA Kitchen to handle demand
1997 - Added complete line of fluid dairy products
1999 - Changed logo of 35 years, putting on a new face to enter the Millennium
2000 - Received Award of Excellence for Outstanding Sales from Pro*Act Client Services.
2004 - Prime Cuts expands to 15000 square foot facility.

Hearn Kirkwood is a privately held Food Service Distributor specializing in produce, meat, poultry, dairy, and seafood. Since our founding in 1946, we have grown from a store front on the downtown Baltimore Produce Market to a 60,000 sq. ft. facility. Hearn Kirkwood purchases 90% of our fresh produce direct from California, Florida, Texas, etc. with the balance supplied by local markets. We are located within one mile of Route 295 and I95 providing us with easy access to Baltimore, Washington and Virginia.
Hearn Kirkwood currently operates a fleet of 33 refrigerated trucks. Our service area includes all of Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware and Northern Virginia. With limited service to Fredericksburg, Philadelphia, and New Jersey.
Diversity...
While produce represents 70% of our volume, we also carry a full line of fresh, frozen and portion cut meats, poultry and seafood. Our product line is further enhanced by a select number of perishable, frozen and proprietary products, including a complete line of dairy items, including fluid. milk. Hearn Kirkwood was the first company servicing the Baltimore, Washington and Virginia corridor to realize the need for fresh cut produce. We started processing in fresh fruits and vegetables in early 1977 and eventually had to build a 5,000 sq. ft. addition to Hearn Kirkwood in 1980. After expanding from within to double shifts and 9,000 sq. ft. plus, Prime Cuts moved to it's current home, a 15,000 sq. ft. facility in the summer of '04, just outside the Jessup Produce Market. Fresh fruit and vegetables for both retail and foodservice are processed daily, shipped to Hearn Kirkwood's distribution facility each day for shipment the next. The Prime Cut label, the first in the area for pre-cut produce, has become the standard to which all others are compared.
Expansion...
Baltimore Meat Packing, purchased in 1984 is a 7,300 sq. ft. building located just 18 miles from Hearn Kirkwood. It is a U.S.D.A. federally inspected plant where meat is processed daily and delivered to Hearn Kirkwood each night for delivery the next day. Our managers have been in the meat and restaurant business for over 30 years combined.
Food Unlimited is our in-house U.S.D.A. kitchen that was added to the Hearn Kirkwood facility in 1990 to further extend our manufacturing capabilities. It serves as an extension of our customer's kitchen during holidays and peak times as well as its own manufacturing division specializing in custom made Hor D'oeuvres, entrée's, grilled vegetables, and a complete line of up scale salads.
In September 1991, Hearn Kirkwood co-founded a Produce Buying Co-op with 6 other distributors called Pro*Act. We have our own buying office in Monterey, California, doing over one billion dollars in annual sales and over 700 million in average produce sales. This has proven to be a definite advantage in quality and cost for Hearn Kirkwood. Pro*Act is currently 44 distributors strong with 68 distribution centers across the country to service multi-unit operators.
Through the years, Hearn Kirkwood has continued to respond to our customers needs by evolving into the Full Line Perishable Specialist we are today.
