Asparagus-Supplies will remain tight. Mother's Day pull is around the corner. Prices will be active. Overall quality is marginal. Market is steady at high prices.
Broccoli- Quality is stable, but some lots are showing yellow discoloration & purple cast. Market has slowed. Cauliflower- Supplies are extremely short. Quality continues to be fair. Some lots are showing off white color, black spotting and brown discoloration. Market is steady. Carrots - Supply & quality continues to be good on all sizes. Quality is good. Market is steady. Celery- All sizes are in short supply due to increased lots showing seeders. Market is higher. Squash- Western Squash: Production will be fair over the next few weeks. Demand has picked up. There is light volume on Italian. Eastern Squash: The Yellow squash market is tight. The green squash market is softer. Cucumbers- Western Cucumbers: Supplies continue to be good and should be finishing in the next few weeks. Eastern Cucumbers: Quality is marginal at this time. The market is softening. Tomatoes– Western: Quality if fair to poor. Roma market has declined slightly. Eastern: There continues to be an offset of sizing. There are not many 6x6 or 5x6 tomatoes . Quality is good. Local and Regional Markets- Maryland farmers and all growers surrounding Maryland are now busy with spring harvests. Many of the early crops are the same in most states; Kale, Radish's, Dandelion, Parsley and Spinach's. Maryland and New Jersey Vineland area is the most prolific at this time.

Onions- Quality is being reported as good with very good supplies of all colors. Market is steady. Vidalia Onions have started with good quality & volume. Market is lower.
Market is unstable. Romaine/Leaf– Prices will vary depending on shipper & growing region. We will continue to see some epidermal peel and blister. Market is steady. Green Onions - Supplies are good. Market is steady. Potatoes -Majority of Idaho potatoes are Burbanks with limited numbers on Norkotahs. The Burbanks are running small with more #2's. Burbank shippers are in very short supply on the 70ct. and larger. Red potatoes have light availability. Gold potatoes have limited availability. There are lighter supplies of white at this time. Value Added - Raw product production is doing well for everything but broccoli and lettuce. Acceptable quality for raw product is present at field level production. There will be some delays in processing caused supply issues in the Salinas Valley . The quality problems such as red to brown discoloration and tip burn in lettuce and romaine can be found in some lots. However, this varies from shipper to shipper. Broccoli processors are not experiencing good supplies with some holding customers to their 12 week averages. Romaine Hearts : The cold weather is preventing the plants from cupping up to form hearts. The situation looks to remain the same in for the near future. Ice in the fields will continue to cause supply issues as well as causing long delays at the shipping locations.

Apples/Pears - Apples: Damage assessment is still being done due the freeze & snow a week ago. The apples from storage available are in a DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLY situation at this time. Pears: Pear volume is lighter. Demand has pushed up. Market is stronger. Berries - Strawberries: Availability continues to be tight at this time. Market should be steady through Mother's Day. Raspberries: Demand continues to exceed supply. Blackberries: Supplies continue to be limited. Look for volume to increase in the next few weeks. Blueberries: New crop blackberries continue to increase daily. Market is steady. Grapes- Crimson red seedless grapes are in good volume. Thompson green seedless grapes have a two-tiered market, regular storage for less money & shorter shelf life or long storage for a premium price with a very good shelf life. Melons- Honeydews: Offshore fruit is winding down quickly. Minimal supplies are left with fair quality. Prices are steady at this time. Cantaloupes: Light supplies with only moderate demand has checked the market.
Kiwi - Expect increasing supply volume with very good supplies of large sized fruit. Stone Fruit - Domestic stone fruit has started in a light way. Peaches, Nectarines & Apricots are available in light volumes. Prices are high at this time. There are only light volumes of Black Plums available. Local Markets - Local markets are winding down and some are even finishing for the season. Expect to see only apples, pears, hard squashes and potatoes until the deal is finished for the year. Watermelon - Increasing volumes continue for seeded & seedless.
