The Best Snacks To Keep You Energized All Day
Now that the clocks have gone back, the sun is setting earlier, and we are losing precious daylight hours. As it starts to get dark around 5 pm, our bodies can’t help but start to get tired and think it’s almost time for bed, when it’s not even time for dinner. The best way to fight this tired feeling is to stay energized throughout the day with some nutrient-boosting meals and snacks, rather than caffeine and sugar that make us crash.
But First- Are You Really Hungry?
Before taking a bite of your snack, listen to your body to see if it’s actually hungry, or if you’re just bored and tired. Try to take a short walk and get some sunlight while you can, and do a few little exercises to get your blood pumping if you’ve been sitting all day. This will wake your body up, and you’ll be able to tell if you really need a snack, or if your body was just tired from lack of movement.
The key to staying alert is to stay hydrated. While water is best for staying hydrated, sometimes we need a drink with a little boost to get our energy up. Instead of reaching for coffee or soda, try having a green tea. The tea has less caffeine than coffee, so your body won’t crash once the effect wears off. Also, green tea has many beneficial effects on your body, including improving brain function, improving physical performance, beneficial antioxidants, and can even lower your risk of infection and multiple diseases.
This is not an excuse to eat a candy bar, as most candies are not made with healthy dark chocolate. Dark chocolate made from cocoa beans is filled with caffeine and helps boost your energy- but once again, it doesn’t have as much caffeine as coffee that may cause you to feel jittery. This darker the chocolate, the more caffeine it has, so be careful not to overindulge.
Whole grains are an excellent source of energy since your body breaks them down slowly, giving you a steady energy release. Whole grains can include brown rice, oatmeal, and whole-wheat bread, pasta and crackers. A great energizing lunch or pick-me-up afternoon snack is a piece of whole-wheat toast with banana and honey on top.
While fruits have a good amount of sugar in them, they are a much better alternative to candy. Candy boosts your glucose levels, once again causing that crash and burn effect. Fruits that are packed with vitamin C are your best options for fighting tiredness, as they help your body convert fat into energy. Watermelon, apples, oranges, and pineapples are all great snacks that are high in vitamin C and will give you the boost you need to get through the day.
