4 Cheap but Healthy Foods

Who said eating healthy  foods has to cost a lot? With food costs rising higher and higher, it can be hard to find a balance between your checkbook and your grocery bill. But there are some foods you can buy to make delicious meals at home by spending about $2.00 per ingredient. If you want to eat a nutritious diet without spending a ton of money, read on.

Brown Rice

Brown rice is good for side dishes, salads, fried rice, soups, stews, and casseroles. Many bags of rice are one pound and contains 10 servings inside the bag. A single serving of rice is a ¼ cup of dry rice. A bag of rice costs about $1.75, which means a serving is about 18 cents.

Nonfat Greek Yogurt

Nonfat Greek yogurt is great as a snack, for parfaits with fruit and granola, or in your morning smoothies. It is packed with 14 grams of protein and has 150 calories for a 6-ounce serving of honey vanilla flavor. Most containers are 6- or 8-ounces but you can save money on a large container. A serving of 6- to 8-ounces is about 89 cents but can be less when it is on sale.

Potatoes

Russet potatoes are very versatile and can be found baked, in breakfasts, salads, casseroles, and stews. A serving is considered a medium or large potato. A single potato costs about 33 cents but a 5-pound bag can be found for about $3.99 and contains about 13 potatoes.

Old-Fashioned Oats

Old-fashioned oats are good hot and cold and can be found in granola, desserts, and in muffins. A ½ cup serving of dry oats costs about 13 cents and a 42-ounce canister can be found in the store of about $3.99. Old-fashioned oats have 150 calories, four grams of fiber, and five grams of protein per serving.
