What Are Great Midsummer Veggies?
Summer is one of the most delicious times of year, whether you love eating your veggies or struggle to clean your plate. Summer gardens are known for exploding with huge harvests, especially when there is a decent amount of rain. If you missed out on planting during the spring but want to catch up by planting midsummer veggies now, here’s what you need to know!
Before you get started planting midsummer veggies, you need to know a few basic facts about the past few months in your local area:
- Your local average light frost date
- Your local average killing frost date
- Cold hardiness of the midsummer plants you chose
- How long it will take each midsummer veggie to reach maturity
Based on the answers to these questions, you should be able to determine whether or not a plant is good to plant now or wait until winter has come and gone. Every vegetable is different, so do your research when making your choice.
Great Midsummer Veggies
Many different vegetables do exceptionally well over the course of the summer, including:
o Kale and collard greens mature in 40-60 days and are hardy down to 20 degrees
o Swiss chard and leaf lettuce mature in 40-60 days and survive a light frost
o Mustard greens and spinach take 30-45 days to mature and can also handle a light frost
These typically take about two months to mature, and they can typically handle at least a light frost. Midsummer root vegetables include beets, kohlrabi, radishes, and parsnips.
Most herbs are known as warm weather crops, as they don’t handle a chill well. If you want to grow herbs, midsummer is too late to get started.
