Healthy Recipes for Your Summer Block Party
Summer is the best time of year for a block party, and every host knows that drinks and food turn an event into a party! Serving healthy snacks and treats at your summer block party is a great way to ensure everyone still feels like taking a dip in the pool afterwards, instead of just taking a nap. Here are some of our best ideas for healthy recipes that you can serve at your summer block party.
Spicy Sweet Potato Fries
Sweet potato fries are a healthier alternative to traditional French fries and they are great served alongside other appetizers or as a side dish for the grilled food at your summer block party. To make spicy sweet potato friends for 4, grab two large sweet potatoes and a spice blend made of 1 tbsp. chili powder, ½ tbsp. of black pepper, ½ tbsp. of sea salt, and ½ tsp. of cumin. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Cut the potatoes into small French fry shapes and place them on the baking sheets. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Bake the fries in the oven for 15 minutes before flipping them and coating them with the spice mixture. Let them bake for another 10-15 minutes and serve.
Crisp and Cool Broccoli Salad
Broccoli salad is always a crowd-pleasing favorite, and this recipe can easily serve 12 hungry bellies during your summer block party. Start with 2 heads of broccoli, cut into florets, 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets, 1 diced red bell pepper, 1 diced green bell pepper, ½ a red onion, diced, ¾ cup green olives, 2 cups halved grape tomatoes, 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, and 1 cup ranch dressing. Making the salad is as simple as combining all of the ingredients in a big bowl, tossing them together, and refrigerating them until it’s party time.
Skinny Hot Wings
Hot wings can actually help you cool down thanks to their punch of spice. To make simple skinny hot wings for your summer block party, all you need is: 20 chicken wings, ½ cup flour, ½ cup hot sauce, ¼ tsp. paprika, ½ tsp. red cayenne pepper, ¼ tsp. salt, 1 tsp/ black pepper, 1 ½ tbsp. butter, and ½ tbsp. minced garlic. Start by mixing together the spices and flour and toss each chicken wing in the mixture. Place the wings on a baking sheet and refrigerate them for 45 minutes. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and place them on a nonstick baking sheet. Bake the wings about 15-18 minutes per side and toss in a sauce made from butter, hot sauce, pepper, and garlic heated up. Enjoy!
