Celebrate Earth Day With Eco-Friendly Meals
This Sunday, April 22, is the 48th anniversary of Earth Day! In 2018, we are seeing a bigger movement to save the planet than ever before, as many people strive for a healthier lifestyle. Some of these changes to live a green lifestyle include electric cars, recycling, and being more aware of the food we eat and how it affects our planet. Continue reading to for a few tips on how to celebrate Earth Day this year with eco-friendly meals.
Eating organic food is a great place to start to support a better planet, as well better health. Organic foods are grown without pesticides, which are chemicals that are toxic to many organisms and contaminate water and soil. Eating organic is the best way to avoid that contamination to our body and Earth.
While not everyone needs to switch to a vegetarian or vegan diet right away, plant-based lifestyles can bring huge benefits for Earth. If people start cutting back their meat consumption by making just a few plant-based meals a week, we will see major changes. For example, beef weighs in at 27 kilograms of carbon emissions per serving, while vegetarian proteins such as lentils use less than one kilogram per serving. This protein switch alone lowers the carbon footprint of a meal by almost 97 percent.
Easy Changes To Help The Planet
With Earth Day in mind, now is the perfect time to learn a few ways you can help the planet with simple changes- with the focus on the word “reusable.” For example, the next time you go grocery shopping, bring reusable bags instead of using multiple plastic or paper bags. Buy a reusable coffee mug and water bottle to fill up rather than buying plastic bottles, and bring your own straw to avoid using plastic straws as much as possible. Lastly, when packing your lunch for work or your children’s lunch for school, stick to reusable containers and lunch boxes instead of sandwich bags and disposable containers.
