Best Pre and Post Workout Nutrition


Exercising every day is important for your health, but it can be hard to know which foods are best to eat before and after your workout to ensure your hard work pays off! The food you eat pre and post-workout have a significant effect on your body, especially if you are exercising with goals to lose weight or gain muscle. Here are some tips on pre and post-workout nutrition to incorporate into your daily life.

Pre-Workout: Carbs

Many people believe that they should stay away from carbohydrates, but carbs actually fuel your muscles. Your pre-workout snack should include some carbs to help your muscles work harder and last longer to get maximum results. Protein is also important, as it helps to rebuild and repair your muscles. However, you typically don’t want to eat right before a workout, since you don’t want your muscles to work while your stomach digests food. Your body will have too much to concentrate on at once, and the competing demands will result in a less than optimal performance.

Experiment with eating at different times before workouts throughout the week, ranging from one to three hours before you hit the gym. A few good pre-workout snack options include peanut butter and jelly (or peanut butter and banana) sandwich, a handful of nuts and raisins, Greek yogurt with fruit, and apple slices with peanut butter.

Post-Workout: Protein, Carbs, And Fats

While many people think about their pre-workout meal, the post-workout meal is just as important! Protein is very important to include in your post-workout meal, as it provides your body with amino acids to repair and rebuild proteins and build new muscle tissue.

Unlike eating before a workout, it’s recommended to eat pretty soon after you finish exercising- about 30 to 45 minutes. This helps your body repair, as well as maximize your results. A few good post-workout meals or snacks include many of the same pre-workout snacks, along with grilled chicken and vegetables, fruit or protein smoothies, salmon and brown rice, black beans, hummus and crackers, and a whole wheat wrap with turkey.
