The Rosaceae Group
Did you know that edible fruits belong to the Rosaceae group, or the rose family? A few of our favorite summer fruits, including apples, pears, cherries, plums, apricots, raspberries, strawberries, and peaches, are actually all members of the flowering plant group.
In the 1800s, people believed that tomatoes had such great healing powers that people bathed in ketchup and tomato pills. Back then, ketchup was first made of fish or mushrooms, but Dr. John Cooke Bennet decided to add tomatoes to it in 1834. With the additional vitamins and antioxidants, he claimed his tomato pills could cure indigestion, jaundice, and more- until others began selling their own fake versions of the pills. Due to the rise of counterfeit pills that made false claims, ketchup was no longer believed to have medicinal properties.
Bananas Help Fight Depression
We know that bananas have significant benefits, including a great source of dietary fiber, keeping blood sugars steady, and strengthening the nervous system. However, you may not know that they contain high levels of tryptophan, which converts into serotonin. This is a chemical in our brain that influences our mood, and it has been found that eating bananas can actually help to fight depression.
Cucumbers Help With Dehydration
Cucumbers are one of the most hydrating foods you can eat- they’re made out of a whopping 96% water. In addition to water, they also include electrolytes that help to restore your body from dehydration.
Beetroot Cures Dandruff
If your dandruff shampoo isn’t cutting it, try boiling some beetroot in water and wash your hair in the water to help cure dandruff.
If you ever want your avocados to ripen quickly, put a banana or apple around it. These fruits give off ethylene gas which helps to speed up the ripening process.
Dark Chocolate vs. Fruit
We know that dark chocolate is the healthiest type of chocolate, but did you know that it can be just as good for you as fruit? When compared to fruit juices made from blueberries and pomegranate, dark chocolate had more disease-fighting antioxidants.
