Healthy Back To School Lunch and Snack Ideas

Now that kids are heading back to school, parents are getting ready for another year of chaotic early mornings. Kids may need to be on the bus by 6 or 7 am, which means that making packing lunches the night before is crucial for a less stressful morning. Continue reading for a few healthy snacks and lunch ideas to prepare ahead of time to ensure your kids eat well at school!

Main Meal

If your children don’t like having the same thing for lunch every day, it’s important to have a few easy recipes on hand. There are so many easy lunches that can be made the night before (or in the morning if you don’t have the time,) that your kids are sure to love.

Sandwiches are always a quick lunch, but try to opt for whole grain or whole-wheat pita bread. Pita bread and hummus, a veggie and hummus wrap, ham and cheese, almond butter and jam, and turkey and cheese roll-ups are all great main meal ideas to keep your kids happy and full.

If they do not feel like having a sandwich for lunch, try a cheese and red pepper quesadilla, bagel and vegetable cream cheese, pasta salad, or hard-boiled eggs for other simple and nutritional lunches.

Snacks

Snacks and sides are just as important as the main meal, as staying full throughout the day helps students stay alert and focused. Pack their bags with granola bars, yogurt, string cheese, popcorn, fruit cups, trail mix, and other small snacks to accompany their lunch or for a snack during the day.

Fruits and Vegetables

It’s very important for kids to get their daily servings of fruits and vegetables, so don’t forget to pack some with every lunch. Kids will eat most fruits on their own, such as apple slices, grapes, strawberries, peaches, and oranges, but they aren’t always excited to eat their vegetables. If that is the case, pack hummus or dressing along with carrots, red pepper slices, celery, or cucumbers to add a tasty element to their snack.
