What Are Superfoods And What Makes Them “Super”?

3.15.19-Highlight.jpg

In the health and nutrition world, the term superfood is used to describe foods with significant health benefits. Many foods are described as superfoods, but have you wondered why exactly they have earned this title? Continue reading to learn about a few well-known superfoods and what makes them so great.

Blueberries

Blueberries are often referred to as superfoods, as they contain various health benefits that our bodies need. Blueberries are full of antioxidants and the darker they are in color, the more antioxidants they have. The berries also have the ability to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, and have anti-inflammatory effects. Other berries such as raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries are also full of vitamins and nutrients and can be effective for helpful digestive and immune-related disorders.

Fish

Fish is another superfood, especially salmon. Since most seafood is often served fried, it’s important to note that while salmon is a healthy choice, fish and chips is, of course, a less healthy option that wouldn’t be considered a superfood. Salmon is very nutritious and is packed with healthy fats, protein, B vitamins, and potassium. The fish is also one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which have a variety of health benefits, including reducing inflammation. Fish is a great alternative to red meat and is recommended to have fish two to three times a week.

Avocado

Avocado is a very popular superfood, as it is not only delicious, but it is highly nutritious. The fruit can reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even some types of cancer. There is some confusion with avocado, as some people stay away from the fruit because they are full of fat. However, it’s important to know that over 75% of the fat in avocados is unsaturated, or good, fat.

Nuts

Nuts are definitely a superfood snack, as they are rich in fiber, protein, and heart-healthy fats. While nuts and seeds are calorically dense, they have the ability to fill you up quickly, so they are actually linked to weight loss (when included in a balanced diet.)
