Dark Leafy Greens
A green smoothie is so healthy because it is made with dark, leafy greens, such as spinach, that contain high-quality amino acids, essential minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Dark greens also contain phytonutrients, which are plant-based chemicals that support your immune system, improve health, and help to reduce illnesses and diseases.
While it can be difficult to get the recommended serving of fruits and vegetables every day, a smoothie makes it easy to drink your vegetables. A green smoothie will keep you full for a longer than a highly concentrated fruit juice and will release energy over a few hours rather than a short burst.
Simple Energy-Boosting Green Smoothie
This simple green smoothie only uses four ingredients and makes for the perfect energy-boosting breakfast or snack. All you will need is:
1 stalk of celery
2 cups of spinach
Handfull of sliced pineapple (fresh or frozen)
2 cups of almond milk or coconut milk
Be sure to wash the celery and spinach before using them in your smoothie, and chop the celery into large pieces. Add the milk to the blender first, then the spinach, then the pieces of celery and pineapple on top. By adding liquid first, the blender blades can move freely. Also, be sure to start your blender on a low speed to break up the pieces of pineapple, then work your way up to a puree. If you add too much milk, add a few ice cubes to get your smoothie to the thickness you prefer. Simply pulse until smooth, and enjoy your healthy green smoothie!
In addition to spinach, kale is also a great dark leafy green to add to your smoothies. For this healthy drink, you’ll need:
¾ cup chopped kale, ribs and thick stems removed
1 small stalk celery, chopped
½ cup apple juice
½ cup ice
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
As mentioned above, start with the liquid, then add vegetables and fruit, then finish with ice on top. Blend all ingredients until smooth and enjoy!
